Surface Chemistry of InP Quantum Dots, Amine–Halide Co-Passivation, and Binding of Z-Type Ligands

Understanding and controlling the surface chemistry of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are essential steps toward improving their opto-electronic properties tailoring material for specific applications. For oleylamine–chloride co-passivated InP QDs synthesized using di-ethylaminophosphine (DEAP), knowledge possible exchange reactions effect on QD is still very limited. In this work, we address issue by a combination experimental computational studies. First, prove that passivated oleylamine (OlNH2) chloride, bound as L-type X-type ligands, respectively. By exposure to organic acids such carboxylic or thiols, L–X can be replaced with oleylammonium chloride in an acid–base-mediated ligand reaction results binding carboxylates thiolates ligands. The latter tend quench band-edge emission forming strongly localized mid-gap states sulfur atoms thiolates. Furthermore, observe ZnCl2 surface, process enabled prior complexation Z-type OlNH2, considerably increases emission. However, resulting photoluminescence efficiency remains modest, conclude DEAP feature diverse set states, which passivation depends at least elimination undercoordinated phosphorous choice ligand.
